In 1929, a popcorn owner in Casper, Wyoming, named Bill O'Sullivan was experimenting with a recipe for candy-coated popcorn. He ended up developing a mouthwatering popcorn combination that has become one of America's favorites - "Karmelkorn" caramel-coated popcorn.
O'Sullivan began selling his new creation in large quantities and business prospered - even through the Depression. The success of his business convinced him that a husband and wife team looking for their own business could make a comfortable living through the "Karmelkorn" name.
By 1930, "Karmelkorn" Shoppes became a franchise system and shoppes began appearing in downtown locations throughout the country. In those days, movie houses and theaters did not have concession stands, and moviegoers bought their popcorn and candy at stores near the theater. Many of these were "Karmelkorn" shoppes.
The "Karmelkorn" system thrived in downtown locations throughout the 1940's. However, as suburban malls began replacing downtown central business districts in the 1960's, the "Karmelkorn" system expanded into shopping malls. In fact, the system of popular downtown businesses transformed into a system of firmly established mall businesses in less than a decade. Few, if any, downtow "Karmelkorn" shoppes remain today.
In 1986 the "Karmelkorn" Shoppes became part of the IDQ franchise system. A new avenue for growth arose when the "Treat Center" concept was developed. Now you can see Karmelkorn, Orange Julius and Dairy Queen products under one storefront in many malls throughout the United States.
Our "Karmelkorn Shoppe" has been located in a mall environment for nearly 20 years. We have owned and operated the Karmelkorn franchise since 1985 adding Orange Julius in 1993.
